After graduating from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a major in History and a minor in English, Shane taught at the primary and secondary levels. He received his M.Ed. and Ph.D. degrees in Education from the University of Virginia. Shane’s research has focused on developmental word knowledge in elementary, middle, and high school students. He has published in a number of research and professional journals. He has authored or co-authored a number of books including Words Their Way: Word study for phonics, vocabulary, and spelling instruction (7th ed.); Words Their Way: Vocabulary for Middle and Secondary Students (2nd ed.); Words Their Way with Struggling Readers, Grades 4-12Teaching the Integrated Language Arts (2nd ed.); Children’s Literacy: Contexts for Meaningful Learning; and Teaching Reading and Writing: The Developmental Approach (2nd ed.)Since 1987 Shane has been a member of the Usage Panel of the American Heritage Dictionary. He served as educational consultant on The American Heritage Children’s Dictionary and was consultant for and wrote the foreword to Curious George’s Dictionary. He is an author of English/Language Arts and Word Study curricula for Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and Savvas Learning Company.
